Solvent extraction is a widely used method for separating mixtures by exploiting differences in the solubility of the components. Solid-liquid extractions allow soluble components to be removed from solids using a liquid solvent.

The VELP SER 158 determines the extractable matter according to the hot solvent extraction method, which gives the same results as the traditional Soxhlet but it is 5 times faster.

Thanks to a wide range of accessories and consumables the operator can perform automated, precise, and cost-effective solid-liquid extractions on different sample types: food & feed, chemical, environmental, agricultural, and more.

Choose your preferred size of glasses, thimbles and gaskets that can be adapted to any application. In addition to the standard accessories, the SER 158 extractor has several optional accessories to satisfy your every need and guarantee the execution of the analysis with maximum safety.

EXTRACTION CUPS

EXTRACTION CUPS
During the solvent extraction process, extraction cups are filled with the solvent, heated by the electrical heating plate and then finally collect the extracted matter.

VELP offers different extraction cups with dimensions and materials:

THIMBLES

THIMBLES
The solvent extraction technique puts in contact a pure solvent with the mixture to extract.

The sample to be analyzed is weighed into a porous cellulose or glass fiber extraction thimble and inserted into the SER 158 Extraction Unit. Thimbles containing the sample are immersed directly into the boiling solvent contained in the extraction cup. During this step, more than 70% of the extraction process occurs.

VELP offers thimbles that differ in size and material. Cellulose extraction thimbles are produced from high-quality cellulose and have excellent mechanical strength and retention; they are generally used for gravimetric determination of the extracted matter. When it comes to qualitative analysis glass fiber thimbles guarantee no substances release and, therefore, maximum accuracy.

The choice of size is strictly correlated to the amount of sample that has to be analyzed. When the hydrolysis step is required to determine the total fat in food & feed samples, the operator uses glass-made crucibles compatible both with the HU6 unit and SER 158 unit guaranteeing no sample loss due to transfer.

GASKETS

GASKETS
The material of the gaskets used between the connection funnel solvent and the extraction cup is critical because it must have excellent chemical resistance to the solvents that can be used on the SER158.

The gaskets offered with the SER 158 are:  In general terms, the viton is easily attacked by ketones and esters, and the butyl rubber by hydrocarbons and halogenated. The vaflon gaskets, instead, are resistant to all types of solvents and mixtures used in extraction.

NOTE: While viton gaskets are assembled on the instrument and butyl ones come with the accessories of the instrument, vaflon gaskets are an optional accessory.

Before starting with an extraction, please check the compatibility of the gasket with the solvent by downloading the comparison table.
