Fast and simultaneous Carbon Nitrogen analyses

Fast and simultaneous Carbon Nitrogen analyses

The CN 802 is a robust and flexible combustion analyzer, that works following official reference methods for the determination of carbon and nitrogen in many industrial sectors such as agriculture, environmental, food & feed, and chemical.

The proprietary CNSoftTM software powers the CN 802 and produces unsupervised, simultaneous results in 5 minutes of:

  • TC: Total Carbon
  • TOC, TIC: Total Organic and Inorganic Carbon (after acidification)
  • TN: Total Nitrogen
  • C/N Ratio

The CN 802 is a safe analyzer that does not require aggressive chemicals or time-consuming analysis steps. Just prepare your sample and walk away!

Sensitivity and Versatility at its best

Sensitivity and Versatility at its best

The CN 802 enables analysis across a wide range of sample types, including solid, semi-solid, and liquid samples.

It accommodates large weights and volumes, and it is suitable both for inhomogeneous samples and those with low concentration levels.

The CN 802 ensures high-precision results and excellent reproducibility with:

  • A carbon limit of detection ranging from very few ppm to 150 mgC;
  • The lowest LOD for Nitrogen;
  • A relative standard deviation (RSD) lower than 0.5% (EDTA).

Capable of processing up to 117 samples at a time, the VELP C/N elemental analyzer boasts exceptional efficiency, enabling the highest sample throughput. This is made possible by the electronic autosampler and balance connection to the PC for direct weighing data transfer.

Laboratories have the option to select between Helium and Argon as the carrier gas. Additionally, with dedicated accessories, kits, and tin cups, you can easily analyze liquid samples with high sensitivity and accuracy.

Efficiency for your lab

Efficiency for your lab

CN 802 analyzes samples of up to 1 g, effectively reducing the cost-per-analysis through VELP combustion technology and the use of genuine consumables with extended lifetimes.

  • The maintenance-free, non-dispersive HighSensIRTM detector ensures consistent performance over time for the analysis of high and low carbon content samples;
  • The CN 802 LoGasTM TCD works with no reference gas ensuring the lowest gas consumption on the market;
  • The possibility to seamlessly switch to argon prevents helium availability issues;
  • Optimized combustion leads to very low oxygen consumption: when utilizing a pre-installed method, the instrument accurately doses the gas to ensure full sample combustion based on its weight and matrix, saving resources;
  • The DriStepTM physical water trap not only requires no maintenance but also removes 99% of water without the need for chemicals
  • The installation of the CN 802 is straightforward, and its compact design saves valuable bench space in your lab.
The combustion technology drastically improves productivity and eliminates the use of chemicals compared to wet chemistry N/protein determination methods.

CN 802 Working Process

CN 802 Working Process
The sample is purged with a carrier and drops down into the combustion reactor where it is converted into its elemental compounds at a high temperature (above 1000°C).

Water separation is performed in 2 steps. The combustion gases are carried to the first maintenance-free physical trap DriStepTM (WT1), strategically placed after combustion, trapping 99% of water. Secondly, a chemical trap (WT2) ensures complete removal of the remaining 1% of water.

The combination of high temperature and the exclusive VcopperTM reduces nitrogen dioxide to molecular nitrogen inside the reduction furnace.

The VELP HighSensIR detector enables analysis of an extremely wide carbon concentration range, from just a few ppm up to 150 mg of absolute carbon, from micro to macro applications.

Then, Auto-regenerative CO2 absorbers trap carbon dioxide, allowing the exclusive TCD (Thermal Conductivity Detector) to detect the Nitrogen content.

Intuitive interactions with CNSoft™

Intuitive interactions with CNSoft™
The CNSoftTM software is the powerful VELP solution that controls and operates the CN 802 analyzer.

Featuring a user-friendly interface, CNSoftTM provides comprehensive information at a glance, including results, database, and instrument conditions.

Users have access to a rich library of pre-installed methods and the ability to create customized ones. An easy calibration curve creation for Carbon and Nitrogen allows for the testing of any sample matrix with no memory effect.

Run a comprehensive Leak Test either across the entire circuit or targeted by zone, following consumable replacement, for instance.

The CN 802 software can be upgraded with the optional 21 CFR Part 11 Package for Pharmaceutical, Cosmetic, and Food industry laboratories that require compliance with FDA regulations.

FAQ
Check technical sheets with answers to most frequently asked questions
Can I determine the TOC with the CN 802?
To determine TOC, you must proceed with the acidification of the sample before analyzing it with the CN 802.

The plate for TOC (TA00000378) and silver foils (code A00000371) are developed to support you in these analyses.
How long is the life of a calibration curve?
Since the accuracy of the calibration curve strictly depends on the TCD, it can be used for several months. It is suggested to periodically verify its precision and if necessary, determine the correction factor.
What are the drivers of Oxygen and gas consumption?
Oxygen and carrier gases consumption depends on the daily use of the instrument and the method applied to perform the analysis. The software feature “help/computation” estimates the consumption of both Helium and Argon by considering the method and the number of analyses per day.
Which consumables are suggested for laboratories analyzing acidic samples?
 When there is an acidic sample, use silver foil and quartz consumables.
How can I choose the right ash collector?
 From an analytical point of view, the ash collector material does not impact the result of the analysis.

The choice depends on the sample matrix or on the preparation step:
- Quartz ash collector is suitable for almost all types of samples
- Ceramic ash collector is suitable for the majority of samples, except those with complex matrix (high percentage of fats or carbohydrates)
- Metal ash collector is suitable for the majority of samples, except samples prepared with acids (samples: NCN - NPN - TOC). Metal ash collectors are a reusable and cost-effective solution.
How to perform analysis on liquid samples?
To perform analysis on liquid samples, dedicated accessories and kits let laboratories perform automatic analysis with high precision and accuracy.

Method 1: the use of tin foil and super-absorbent powder
Method 2: with tin capsules and discs for capsules
Method 3: direct injection with a syringe
