Sample preparation for TOC determination in environmental samples

Total Organic Carbon (TOC) is a key parameter for assessing soil quality in agriculture, evaluating ecological risks from organic contaminants, and classifying waste for landfill disposal.

TOC determination follows international standards such as ISO 10694 or EN 15936. With the VELP kit for TOC/sample preparation, the “direct method” can be applied to any kind of sample matrix, delivering reliable and accurate results.

In this procedure, the Total Inorganic Carbon (TIC) present in the samples is eliminated through acid treatment, after which the remaining organic carbon is measured directly via dry combustion. The result is expressed as % TOC relative to the dry mass.

A complete kit for TOC sample preparation

The kit provides all the essential components needed to efficiently perform the acidification step. It features silver foils, tin foil cups, a preparation plate, and a base with a Ø135 mm diameter.

Notably, the base and the preparation plate are engineered for seamless compatibility with all VELP round-top hotplates and hotplate stirrers, as well as other round-top models with a Ø135 mm diameter.

To enhance functionality, the kit also includes a ceramic ash collector designed specifically for use with the combustion reactor in VELP Elemental Analyzers. This component is perfectly suited for analyses involving strong acids, such as the ones used for TOC determinations.
